Want to know a real simple trick that will instantly decrease stress levels in your body?
For most of us, modern lifestyle can cause our bodies to spend too much time in a stressed state. Too much constant stress over a long period can lead to a huge range of physiological issues. One of the effects of stress that we commonly see in the clinic is how it contributes to muscle tension, but stress affects us in so many other ways. It can contribute to or worsen many health problems that you might already have, or it can increase your predisposition to developing certain health problems in the future.
Thankfully though, the good news is, there are ways to decrease the impacts on our body from chronic stress. One of the most simple and effective things you can do to instantly lower your stress level (and you can do it anywhere, anytime) is to take a deep breath.
Deep breathing acts to instantly decrease the stress response in our body. It does this in various ways. One of them is that there are certain nerve receptors deep in the lower, deeper parts of our lungs that, when stimulated by deep breathing, act to decrease the levels of stress hormones in our body. But these nerve receptors are only stimulated when we fill our lungs with a deep breath.
The more regularly we can give our body a break from the otherwise relatively constant bombardment of stress hormones, the better off our health and well-being will be in both the short and the long-term. So throughout your day, make it a habit to take some slow deep breaths at various times, preferably through your nose. The more you do this, the better you will feel, and the less impact stress will have on your body.
In a previous blog, we’ve explained the technique of optimal breathing and how to do deep breathing exercises, so feel free to check this out. But at the very least, you can help your body immensely by every now and then throughout your day, simply taking some slow, deep breaths.
